The Online Shopping Gamble

8 Made in Italy Leather Bag

8 Made in Italy Leather Bag | PH. JEFF SAMANIEGO

Many of you know the Italian outlet, now ran by Net-a-Porter,  Yoox is a very interesting, awesome, confusing, and sometimes overstimulating website that offers some of the most sought after brands for a steal of a price.

Up until recently, I have purchased only items from brands I knew of on Yoox.  For example, I grabbed a Sartoria Parma jacket from renowned Italian label Caruso for about 1/10th of the MSRP.  You can’t beat that.  I never really wanted to play the guessing game on “Italian made” items from companies with no online tracking record or commentary.  There is plenty of interesting inventory scattered around Yoox, and it becomes difficult at times to really decipher the style and design of some of the garments due to the infamously poor product shots, but sometimes the urge can become too great to let a potential grail find slip through your fingers.  The urge got the best of me one day, and I am so glad that it did.

I have been in the market for a brown leather brief/tote for some time now.  I have scoured the internet and the streets of NYC, while coming up empty handed.  Up until this point, I only really searched Yoox for suits and jackets, but I decided to check out what kind of bags they had online – thinking there would be a few decently priced from Mismo and such.  After looking through the more recognizable brands, I couldn’t find anything that was speaking to me – so I continued to browse.  After some more browsing…and searching… and filtering, I found what looked to be a beautiful pebble grain tote-brief hybrid that seemed to be almost exactly what I was looking for.  It was supposedly made in Italy and 100% genuine cowhide leather.  The bag was made by “8” made in Italy, and they have been popping up more and more on Yoox.  It seemed too good to be true, but with a common Yoox code, the price was wayyyyyy too good to not take a gamble – worst case scenario is that I have to return it.  That didn’t happen…

When the bag arrived, I was really blown away.  For the price, the quality was absolutely stunning and would probably give some more expensive bags a run for their money.  The pebble grain leather is incredibly soft and sturdy, there is a ton of space in it, and it was almost just what I was looking for.  I have been using it heavily for the past month or so (since I got it), and it shows no early signs of diminished quality or shotty craftsmanship.  I think it’ll last me for a little while, but only time will tell.

The gamble really paid off with this 8 bag.  The brand also sells other items on Yoox such as suits and jackets, but I have been unable to find any information on the company.  If anyone has any info, be sure to let me know in the comments.

Lastly, not all online shopping gambles will payoff, but its fun to take a shot in the dark sometimes.  Who knows whats out there, and it can be exciting to discover new brands.  In the end, it may not be worth it, but when it is worth it…. man, is it worth it!
